I am such the
procrastinator. I have not filed my taxes yet and am planning to tackle them this week. I usually do my own taxes and plan on doing the same this year. Being that this year is our first year doing taxes with Mattie, I was wondering is there anything really different if your child has a disability? We don't get any
SSI (I'm guessing that's what it is called). I'm sure turbo tax will walk me through most of it, but I don't want to miss anything. Any advice would be appreciated!

Turbo Tax will walk you through it, yes. I just did this. There is something on there about the adoption being of a special needs child, but there are definitions of what qualifies a child for special needs and this only applies if the child was adopted domestically. I didn't read it since Nika came from Russia and I can't remember off the top of my head if your daughter was a domestic adoption, but if so...read it and see what it says. ;) Hopefully it will help!
I have never filed anything differently for Ethan having a disability.
I just filed mine and when you are putting in your dependents it will ask if your child is disabled. I put yes (not sure if Ds is what they had in mind) but I didn't see it change anything. On my NE ohio yahoo group they posted a paper with all of this stuff that you could deduct. It includes doctors appts and all of that but I didn't do it. If you want to join the group and look at it, or if you want me to try and send you the paper I would be happy to. I filed iwth Tubotex as well.
I recently received a link to this article from my local Ds association. It has some tips on things that could be deductions or credits that you may not otherwise think of. Hope this helps! http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/tax.2006.benefits.oconnor.htm
For some reason the entire web address didn't post in my previous comment. Here's hoping this works!

Hope you get some additional deducts! Good Luck with that!
We did turbo tax, and on the NC state return there is a box to check if you have a child with a disability. It got us I think $61 dollars additional credit. It wasn't about adoption, just with a disability. Best of luck!
I finished my taxes. What a relief to get that done! I found that it really didn't matter whether your child is considered disabled or not. Even with all our medical bills, it didn't add up to enough. Thanks to all that gave me input.
